A vintage coat
I’ve talked a bit about wanting a new coat. A few days after that post, I found myself in the biggest funk. I just couldn’t figure out why exactly, until I was on the train, stalled at Charles MGH (why does the T always stall at Charles MGH, btw!?).
Earlier in the week, a cousin sent pictures of what the family compound looked like after the earthquake in Haiti. The main house, my grand-aunt’s house, suffered cracks but wasn’t too badly damaged. My mother’s house however, a lovely two-storied white washed house, fell to its knees and has to be rebuilt.
Included in the email were the pictures of the family sleeping in tents in the yard. It wasn’t until I was on the train that I understood my funk and realized that I didn’t need a new coat, I needed to send money home.
Later that week, an aunt came up from Haiti. Tatie Denise is an amazing storyteller and regaled us of where she was during the earthquake. The worst, however, was seeing a home video from a friend of the family who happened to playing with the video function of his camera’s settings at the time.
I can’t quite explain the trepidation of watching the calm before devastation. There was a scan of the neighborhood. I saw the bakery, the corner store and freshly painted houses. I heard people laughing, and then all of a sudden, horrible shaking, screams, and houses that were once standing, turned to rubble………so, since I already own about half a dozen coats, I don’t think that I reallllly need a new one right now.
However, you should know that Allison, in the above picture bought her coat on Etsy, and reports that right now, there is a wonderful sale on coats going on. I’m digging this one and this vintage fur trim one.

Hi! I ran into you and your boyfriend on newbury street while you were taking this picture. LOVE your blog. You must have a much nicer camera than I do (mine is tending to blur–need a new lens). Anyways just wanted to say hi and keep up the awesome work. (If you ever want to go out together to take some photos, let me know.)
