On The T

I take the T almost every day. At some point, I lived near Alewife, and now, I live at the other end of the Red Line. The T gives me a very nice impression of life in Boston. You see the tourists trying to figure out what Inbound and Outbound truly mean. You see people on their way to work, you see high-schoolers all dressed up on their way to the prom, and you see folks so exhausted that they can’t stay awake during the train ride home. You hear every language you can image spoken on the train. The cadence of those tongues falling like water on rocks…Really you see it all. Even cute little girls in tutus.

On the day that I ran into this girl and her mother, I was in Central Square on my way into town. I remember the day clearly. We were heading into the last days of summer. I had just finished an ice cream from Toscanini’s and needed to prepare for the trip home. But for some reason, I found a bench and decided to linger in Central Square. I’d like to think that perhaps I was waiting for the tutu.

About 10 minutes passed as I watched people come and go. Then came the mother and daughter team; I followed them to the T. The two of them held hands, chatted amiably while completely unaware of me in the background. I picked up my camera, adjusted my ISO and at that same moment, the little girl put out her hand as the train pulled into the station.
