Vic Market

Of all the times I’ve been to Melbourne, this February was the first time I went to Queen Victoria Market, affectionately known as Vic Market to the locals.

I love markets. When I was good (which wasn’t often) as a tyke my grandmother used to take me to the market in Port-au-Prince.  I loved being surrounded by the rich green of avocados, the mottled yellow and brown of papaya, earth colored potatoes or the ivory of onions.

Markets always leave me wanting to cook a feast or spend too much money on nick knacks. Vic Market did not disappoint me at all!  There was aboriginal art, mementos (sadly, no boomerangs for me), the juiciest cherries, mangoes, figs, and pineapples (it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere after all).  Oh, and there were artisanal goods such as homemade olives, Vic Market’s famous Italian sausages, the best coffee, wine, meat pies, an assortment of cooking spices, cheeses, cold meats, doughnuts…you name it, it’s at Vic Market.  Truly, we have nothing like it in Boston.  The more I think of Vic Market, the markets of the South of France, or of Borough Market in London, the more I think we would benefit from such a haven for farmers and artisans in Boston….perhaps in time.

Happy weekend!  Sleep well!  Still trying to get over my jet lag.

You have managed to cover a truly iconic landmark for Melbourne! I hope it was all you expected!
I understand that there are two other really cool market, one in South Melbourne and the other in Parhan, so next time you make it over to Australia, make sure you check them out!
Did you take other photos that you can share with us?
    Have a great President's day weekend :)
